I played Dead Space years ago and never watched Event Horizon until today. The similarities jump out at you immediately. The first 10 minutes of Event Horizon and all I could think about was Dead Space.

There's one other movie you left out that also played a big part in influencing The Last of us. It's Leon The Professional. Ellie shares many of the characteristics of Matilda in the film. Her rough upbringing, Her additude, and her independence. Leon was sort of Forced to take her in after her family died. The only person she cared about was her baby brother. Leon sort of fathers her and teaches her his skills as a Hitman. Joel would teach Ellie how to use a gun. Well kind of. But he does tell her to make each shot count. He would also fill that role. Leon would open up to Matilda a little more once he accepted her. The same thing happens to Joel. He opens up after Accepting Ellie. He said he'd teach her to play a Guitar. So yeah. Both Leon The Professional and The Last of us are more similar than you think.

I can't watch Event Horizon without thinking of Dead Space, and vice versa. The similarities are shocking. But of course The Thing; which I feel has an even stronger influence on Callisto Protocol.

And as both characters return in the sequel.
